In a statement issued on Tuesday, the National Police Service (NPS) said the arrests followed a swift, joint operation by officers from Dagahaley Police Station and the Dadaab Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).

Police in Garissa County have arrested two suspects following a robbery with violence and a separate shooting incident along the Alikune–Dagahaley Road, in an operation that led to the recovery of a concealed AK-47 rifle and ammunition.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the National Police Service (NPS) said the arrests followed a swift, joint operation by officers from Dagahaley Police Station and the Dadaab Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).

According to police, officers “took immediate action, launching a relentless pursuit of those responsible for terrorising road users and local residents” after receiving reports of the incidents.

The operation was led by the Officer Commanding Station (OCS) Dagahaley and resulted in the arrest of a 26-year-old suspect at Dagahaley Market.

Upon his arrest, the suspect “confessed to his involvement in the crimes,” police said, adding that he revealed the firearm used in the attacks had been “hired specifically to carry out the attacks.”

He then led officers to a hidden location where an AK-47 rifle was recovered. The weapon was found “wrapped in a jacket, concealed inside a gunny bag, and buried underground,” alongside a magazine loaded with three rounds of ammunition.

The operation yielded a further breakthrough when the suspect guided officers to a residence in Bula Kheir Village within the Ifo Refugee Camp, where his accomplice was arrested. Police confirmed that both suspects are now in custody as investigations continue.

“The search for one other suspect is ongoing,” the National Police Service said, noting that security operations in the area have been intensified.

The NPS added that it is “maintaining heightened vigilance and reaffirms its commitment to decisively combat violent crime and ensure the safety of all residents in Garissa County.”

Police have urged members of the public to continue cooperating with security agencies by sharing information that could help bring the remaining suspect to justice and enhance safety along the busy road.
